8 – Wetplate Re-Enactment at the Waterloo
Farm Museum,
9998 Waterloo-Munith Rd.
(corner of Schumacher Road),
Grass Lake, Mich.
The
grounds of the Waterloo Farm Museum will
become a 19th century portrait studio for a select group of
re-enactors. Greg Schultz of Wayne, Michigan, will
create images of authentically-dressed re-enactors using a restored
Victorian-era view camera and lenses. He will develop the images
on-site with a photographic dark room inside a small wagon. His
pictures will be made employing the wetplate collodion photographic process to make tintypes, a medium
popular from the late 1850s through the 1880s. Volunteers assisting Mr.
Schultz as photographic subjects will be dressed appropriately in period garb
for various activities common in the wetplate
era. Important note: the wetplate
photographic process requires fair weather. If rain is expected,
demonstrations could be impacted accordingly. Mr Schultz does wetplate photography only as a hobby and not as a
business. He will only make images of select volunteers; tintypes will
not be available to the viewing public. We ask those wishing to observe
the process to show respect for the demonstrators and their efforts to
re-create an authentic experience. This means that members of the
public, as well as their modern conveyances and accoutrements (AKA cars
and stuff), may be asked to keep their distance so as to maintain a line of
sight which reflects the tintype era. Although the Museum buildings
will not be open for tours during this free pre-season event, the public is
welcome to attend. For more information call (517) 763-6409,
email roarkaiser@yahoo.com or visit www.waterloofarmmuseum.org
