4. A Good Wellness Coach Develops a Network of Mentors and Experts, including Research Scientists, Medical Doctors, Nutrition Professionals, etc.

“I became a Wellness Coach because I found a Coach who met my needs,” explains Driscilla.  “I tried many systems and diet fads, but none really worked and some were even adversely affecting my health.  Luckily, I found someone who was honest with me and knew what she was talking about!

“Then people started coming up to me saying, ‘Wow, Driscilla, you look great!  What have you been doing?’  That made me want to share what I had found.

“I quickly learned that the first thing you need to do to be healthy is eat the right foods.  Sometimes it is just eating a little less of this and a little more of that.  Other times it means adding a food or two with the necessary nutrients, or possibly eliminating some with unhealthy substances.  Sometimes you need to supplement what you are eating.

“I also learned that our drug-obsessed society needs to find better answers
to their nutritional needs than a chemical ‘Silver Bullet!’  Some drugs are
miraculous cures, but others are merely substitutes for what good nutrition can do for








you.  In talking with medical doctors I am often amazed at how little many of them know about nutrition.  They have been trained that the solution to a health problem is to ‘prescribe a drug.’

“Unfortunately, almost all drugs have side effects.  Some side effects are worse than the situations they are supposed to cure.  When an individual takes a variety of drugs, the side effects are compounded.

“Sometimes the solution is as simple as eating a food with the right nutrient.  Take the case of English sailors who ventured on long voyages of discovery in the 16th Century.  The English weren’t known for their healthy diets in the first place, and on long voyages – eating mostly hard-tack (a type of biscuit) and salt-pork – many sailors would develop scurvy, rickets or beriberi, ALL of which are deficiency diseases.  However, those who sailed to the tropics often didn’t get the diseases. 

“It was discovered those sailors were eating fresh native foods, in particular citrus fruits: oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes.  The solution was to carry a supply of citrus fruits on board for the sailors to eat or suck on.  They also found that the lime was the citrus fruit which stayed fresh the longest aboard a ship.  Now you also know why the English are often referred to as ‘Limeys.’

“The story of English sailors emphasizes how important eating the right foods with the right nutritional elements can be.  Americans are among the most health-conscious but are also among the worst at making food choices.  Americans drink millions of gallons of diet pop to avoid the high levels of sugar in soft drinks.  However, the chemical sweeteners in diet drinks are worse for you than the sugars!  Persons concerned about cholesterol levels eat margarine instead of butter; but the trans-fats in margarine are worse for you than the natural fats in butter!

“These examples are just the tiniest tip of a HUGE nutritional iceberg of inappropriate eating habits.  And that is the REAL secret as to why I became a Wellness Coach.  If you are enjoying optimal health; are at an appropriate weight; have a full-measure of energy to get you through the day; and wake up every morning happy to greet the day, then you might not need a Wellness Coach.  However, if any of these are not true for you, then perhaps I can help you.”
